Each flag has its own story and meaning. The Italian Constitution, came in force on 1st January 1948, established that “The Republic’s flag is the Italian Tricolor: green, white and red”. And this is the flag known nowadays, but in the past it has endured changes: The Italian Tricolor appeared for the first time on the 14th November 1795 in a student’s manifestation in Bologna. It then became the official flag of the Cisalpine Republic on 7th January 1797. The three colors were then disposed in horizontal stripes: the red one on the top, the white one in the middle and the green one at the bottom. The white part displayed the symbol of the union between the populations of Bologna, Ferrara, Modena and Reggio Emilia. Since that time, the different historical events in Italy changed the flag by different forms and different decorations. The typical colors have always remained the same however. On 2nd July 1948 the constitution had been written and the definitive Italian flag was born.
